Description
We are seeking a compassionate and detail-oriented Benefits Specialist to join our CHOICES Program team. In this role, you will provide Medicare, Medicaid, and public benefits counseling to older adults, individuals with disabilities, and caregivers.
The Benefits Specialist plays an essential role in helping community members understand their options, complete screenings, navigate benefits programs, and access needed services. This 35 hour a week position combines direct client support, outreach, data management, and community education.
Key Responsibilities
- Complete CHOICES New Team Member Training and participate in all required training, webinars, and meetings
- Provide individualized Medicare and Medicaid counseling in office and community-based settings
- Conduct client screenings using approved tools and provide follow-up guidance
- Deliver educational presentations to seniors, caregivers, and professional partners
- Accurately enter and maintain client information in case management systems
- Develop and maintain educational materials and outreach toolkits
- Support and coordinate volunteer activities in office and field settings
- Assist with preparation of monthly, quarterly, and performance benchmark reports
- Maintain strict confidentiality and compliance with federal, state, and organizational requirements
- Perform other related duties to support program goals

Requirements
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, Social Work, or related field OR 2–3 years of experience in a social service, healthcare, or community-based setting
- Completion of Connecticut CHOICES Counselor certification (or ability to obtain within designated timeframe)
- Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle, and proof of insurance
- Ability to travel throughout the service region
Preferred Qualifications
- Bilingual (English/Spanish)
- Experience working with older adults, individuals with disabilities, or public benefits programs
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills with a compassionate approach
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Comfortable delivering public presentations
- Strong time management and organizational skills
- Attention to detail and accuracy in documentation
- Experience with data entry, database management, and reporting
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Teams) and applications such as Outlook and Zoom
Work Environment
- Combination of office, community, and field-based settings including senior centers and partner agencies
- Occasional work in non-climate-controlled environments during outreach events
- Ability to lift and carry 5–10 pounds
